Walking into biology during my first day of freshman year, I caught sight of the board. There, written in huge chalky lines, was the word “evolution”. As students began to trickle in, my thoughts went immediately to ways in which I could disprove whatever words came from my teacher’s mouth. This was my first time at a public school, I had been going to the same religious school from pre-school through eighth grade. While I was taught evolution, my teachers had always encouraged us to dismiss it. As I thought more about evolution, I decided to research and it opened my eyes to a whole new world that changed my life, and began my enthrallment with science. To show kids it is possible to become involved in science without sacrificing beliefs
Learning about the theory of evolution changed my life.
I want to teach other kids, that science doesn’t necessarily contradict their beliefs and that having a strong scientific background, leads to a far more curious mind and a love for discovery. We cannot let ourselves fall to the surmise of belief without proper, critical thought. In instilling a hatred for science, we cause ourselves, our families, and future generations to dismiss science and ultimately raise a lack of wonder concerning the natural world. Alternatively, with a belief that science disproves religion without question, causes hostility and a lack of trust in science. It is vital that we reconcile beliefs to push scientific inquiry and discovery in young minds forward.
My story is one that has not been told. Coming from a deeply religious family, controversial topics in science were never discussed. By asking the provocative questions, that aren't being asked but should, we can truly discover what the cause for this hostility is and in turn, teach our children to ask these questions and to not be satisfied with an answer, but to continually explore. By watching interviews with kids, teachers and parents alike, I will show the humorous and eye opening look into the world of science education and what you can do to help.
